Sophia’s Big Adventure: Teaching English at Villa Siga Fall

Hi, my name is Sophia Hall, and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area of North America. I’m 17 years old, and I wanted to share something that’s close to my heart. My friend’s family has a beautiful place called Villa Siga Fall, in a small village called Mbodiene in Senegal, West Africa.

Villa Siga Fall isn’t just a villa. It’s a place where people come together; locals, visitors, and families, and where kids can feel safe to learn and dream big. Even though I’m far away, I wanted to find a way to help the children who live there.

So, in 2022, I decided to give English classes to the young kids in Mbodiene! How do I do it, even from so far away? Well, with help from Joseph Diene, a retired teacher who also helped build Villa Siga Fall, we made it work in a fun and meaningful way.

We used video calls and even sent simple worksheets and activities that I helped design. I created games with pictures and taught words like “hello,” “friend,” “sun,” and “home.” The kids at Villa Siga were so excited to learn English, and I was just as excited to learn a few Wolof words too, like naka nga def (how are you?).

This experience made me realize that even as a teenager, I can help other kids with their english literacy. And Villa Siga isn’t just a building, it’s a place where dreams grow, and where kids from around the world can learn from each other.

One day, I hope I can visit in person. Until then, I’ll keep teaching, learning, and dreaming from afar to help the children of Senegal.
