A return to the roots
After leaving my birthplace of Dakar, Senegal at the age of 9, I could never have imagined the gargantuan adventure that life had in store for me. An adventure that spanned three continents and would take me halfway around the world for decades, seemingly far from the quaint and peaceful streets of my native country.
After living in France for the next 14 years, my life’s journey took me to California for what was, at the time, the greatest city in the world.
It was supposed to be a year of discovery that somehow turned into 24 beautiful years.
I lived the American dream by working hard, starting from scratch, building a successful business and starting my family. But for me life is anything but predictable; or should I say the adventure continued. While against all odds and to the surprise of many and myself to some extent, I have found myself in France in recent years. I have traded the beautiful hills of San Francisco, its cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge, for the seemingly endless beauty and charm of the French Riviera. But it also brought me closer to the place where it all began,
my native Senegal. During my recent travels there, I realized how much I wanted to reconnect with my roots, my extended family, my childhood memories, but also the need to see my children learn and connect with my culture.
Then emotions did the rest. I bought a piece of land near the ocean south of
south of Dakar, and decided to build a small house that my children and I, my family and friends, could use as a home base in Africa. I made my initial journey from Senegal to France and then to the United States. Now I am doing the reverse, the return trip with my children. Life is as beautiful as it is unpredictable.
But Villa SIGAFALL is not just any house; it embodies a lot of who I am.
it embodies a lot of who I am. Let’s go back for a moment to the American Dream adventure I experienced. During my time here, I started out as an intern in the hardwood industry; then became a valuable employee for a growing flooring company in the San Francisco area, and eventually started my own business as a flooring specialist and consultant. The early days were challenging to say the least, but my hard work and perseverance paid off.
My business has grown year after year, and I have twice been recognized as an outstanding female entrepreneur by the National Hardwood Association in an industry
in a male-dominated industry. To say that wood flooring and wood in general is what best defines me professionally is an understatement. Not to mention that I am also very passionate about this industry. So I thought what better way to reconnect with my roots than to build a home in my native Senegal; a home that best represents me, a home built entirely of wood.
best, a house built entirely of sustainably grown wood, with a design that
with a design that reflects my life’s journey.
So with the help of my many connections in the hardwood industry, I found the perfect solution: a Brazilian company that provides superior tropical woods and innovative designs for unique home construction; but is also cost effective and easily replicated.
To add another continent to my journey,
just kidding, I went to Sao-Paulo to learn more.
I don’t know if it was the caipirinhas or the charm of the Brazilians,
but when I left, a large container full of wood quickly followed.
Its destination, Senegal.
To improve the process and create jobs in Senegal, I called on my family in Dakar to help me master the many facets of
construction and to familiarize myself with the local laws. A great way to reconnect with them and get them involved in the project. Villa SIGAFALL will be (is) my Senegalese home. It will remind me that no matter where the rest of my life’s journey takes me, a big part of me will always be where it all began. But more than that, I hope it will be a place
to welcome all of my family and many friends from all over the world who would like to come and experience the Teranga (hospitality)
Senegalese hospitality.
Finally, I would like to encourage the Senegalese and the many foreigners who
Senegal as their second home to be inspired by my story and by the
story and the Villa SIGAFALL to build a beautiful and sustainable wooden house at an
at an extremely competitive cost.
Come and visit me in Senegal and let’s dream together about other projects.
